Lawrence “Shorty” Ward, of Findlay, peacefully passed away early Friday morning, December 14, 2018 at the age of 90 at Birchaven Village. He was born in McArthur, Ohio on May 23, 1928 to the late Arthur and Elva Ward. On February 14, 1962, Lawrence married Vera Jean Haase and she preceded him in death on November 4, 2004.

Larry retired from Mennel Mill as a truck driver in 1995 after 45 years of service. His trucker nickname was “Doughboy” and in 1955 he started the Mennel Mill retiree group. Larry served in the United States Army during 1950 – 1952 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of First Christian Church of Fostoria since 1968 and served as the superintendent of Sunday school choir, sang in the choir, and was chairman of the Elders. He was also a member of the Moose, American Legion and Honor Guard. Larry enjoyed fishing and boating at Long Lake, Michigan with his family. He also enjoyed motorcycling and making ice cream in his driveway.

Larry is survived by his children, Duane Ward, Cathy (Dennis) Stauffer both of Findlay, Cheryl (Frank) Hampshire of South Carolina, and Sue (Jeff) Meyers of Florida; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Rosetta Norris of Fostoria. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Jim.

Friends and family may visit on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at HUFFORD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Manor Hill Rd, Findlay (419-422-1500). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 19th at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Mark Weatherman officiating. Interment will follow in Knollcrest Cemetery with the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad performing full military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Larry’s memory can be made to the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad or the Hancock County Humane Society.

  1. Wardie was a great guy and I enjoyed working with him for many years. He always had great stories of trucking in the “old days”. So sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to all of his family.
